Owyhee River Sample Itinerary We like to keep our schedule flexible so we can customize every trip. Activities will vary according to the group interests, weather, and water levels. DAY
BEFORE the trip (any section) - Arrive in Boise, Idaho.
That evening we will meet to distribute waterproof packs for your
gear and go over last minute details. PART
I (Upper Owyhee) DAY
1: Drive from Boise to Duck Valley Indian Reservation to begin the trip.
The river meanders through a beautiful open valley with nesting
geese and ducks. Soon it
starts cutting a narrow gorge and we have several miles of class III to
IV water. DAY
2-5: The river will run through
several beautiful narrow canyons, alternating with slow meandering
stretches, and areas where the canyon opens up.
There are some great class III to V+ rapids, including Owyhee
Falls, which may have to be portaged or lined.
We will have time to explore intriguing side canyons, and the
remnants of a homestead. DAY
6: Leisurely float down to
Crutchers Crossing. Drive back to Boise, arriving late afternoon or
early evening. Those continuing on will now be on the Middle
Owyhee.
PART
II (Middle Owyhee) DAY
1: Drive from Boise to Crutchers
Crossing. After rigging and
lunch we'll head down the river. Right
away we'll hit a couple of good rapids. Make camp and take a short hike. DAY
2-5: We float from Idaho into
Oregon and run several Class III & IV rapids.
There is some beautiful quiet floating until we get below Three
Forks. We can take some
excellent hikes, see ancient petroglyphs, soak in a natural warm
springs, and probably catch a glimpse of bighorn sheep.
After Three Forks the action picks up and we run a series of
exciting class III to V rapids. The
final rapid is Widow Maker, which may have to be lined or portaged.
DAY
6: A fairly quiet and
tranquil float down to Rome. Drive
back to Boise for the evening. Those
continuing will now be on the on the Lower Owyhee. PART
III (Lower Owyhee) DAY
1: Drive from Boise to Rome,
Oregon. A relaxing float
through open field country down to the Rome Cliffs (a very colorful
strata). DAY
2-4: We will float through open
and sheer walled canyons, visit remnants of old homestead and Indian
petroglyphs. There will be
hot springs along the way, and the colorful Chalk Hills have great
hiking. The rapids are
mostly fun Class III’s. DAY 5: A beautiful float down to Lake Owyhee and on to Leslie Gulch, our take out spot. Drive back to Boise for the evening. Idaho
