Owyhee River Sample Itinerary

We like to keep our schedule flexible so we can customize every trip.  Activities will vary according to the group interests, weather, and water levels.

DAY BEFORE the trip (any section) - Arrive in Boise, Idaho.  That evening we will meet to distribute waterproof packs for your gear and go over last minute details.

PART I (Upper Owyhee)

DAY 1: Drive from Boise to Duck Valley Indian Reservation to begin the trip.  The river meanders through a beautiful open valley with nesting geese and ducks.  Soon it starts cutting a narrow gorge and we have several miles of class III to IV water.

DAY 2-5: The river will run through several beautiful narrow canyons, alternating with slow meandering stretches, and areas where the canyon opens up.  There are some great class III to V+ rapids, including Owyhee Falls, which may have to be portaged or lined.  We will have time to explore intriguing side canyons, and the remnants of a homestead.

DAY 6: Leisurely float down to Crutchers Crossing. Drive back to Boise, arriving late afternoon or early evening. Those continuing on will now be on the Middle Owyhee.

PART II (Middle Owyhee)

DAY 1: Drive from Boise to Crutchers Crossing.  After rigging and lunch we'll head down the river.  Right away we'll hit a couple of good rapids. Make camp and take a short hike.

DAY 2-5: We float from Idaho into Oregon and run several Class III & IV rapids.  There is some beautiful quiet floating until we get below Three Forks.  We can take some excellent hikes, see ancient petroglyphs, soak in a natural warm springs, and probably catch a glimpse of bighorn sheep.  After Three Forks the action picks up and we run a series of exciting class III to V rapids.  The final rapid is Widow Maker, which may have to be lined or portaged.

DAY 6: A fairly quiet and tranquil float down to Rome.  Drive back to Boise for the evening.  Those continuing will now be on the on the Lower Owyhee.

 PART III (Lower Owyhee)

DAY 1: Drive from Boise to Rome, Oregon.  A relaxing float through open field country down to the Rome Cliffs (a very colorful strata).

DAY 2-4: We will float through open and sheer walled canyons, visit remnants of old homestead and Indian petroglyphs.  There will be hot springs along the way, and the colorful Chalk Hills have great hiking.  The rapids are mostly fun Class III’s.

DAY 5: A beautiful float down to Lake Owyhee and on to Leslie Gulch, our take out spot. Drive back to Boise for the evening.
