 Jarbidge-Bruneau River

Rafting on the Jarbidge and Bruneau Rivers is for those seeking a different kind of whitewater rafting experience.  You won’t find huge boats loaded with families, or large trips that hit camp like a Marine invasion.  What you will find is secluded and beautiful desert rivers, impressive canyons, fast-paced and technical whitewater, abundant wildlife, and great hiking.

Jarbidge River
The Jarbidge is a small, swift, and rocky river that falls a remarkable 50 feet per mile.  We take 12-foot oar-boats with one guide and one guest per boat (no that isn’t a typo) to negotiate the many class III to V+ rapids, and we usually have to line or partially portage one rapid.

High cliffs form the canyon walls as the river twists and turns around blind corners.  The river is a slim, green oasis in the middle of the high desert.  When we hike up to the canyon rim, the open country stretches off in all directions, and swifts, swallows, and eagles swoop overhead.

Bruneau River
When the Jarbidge reaches the confluence with the Bruneau, we have a chance to soak in a natural hot springs, and relax a little as the pace of the river slows.  This is also where those running only the Bruneau will join the trip.
This section of the Bruneau Canyon is one of the prettiest of all the desert rivers.

The first several days on the Bruneau have excellent hiking up the side canyons, and some fun class III rapids.  The willows and Junipers along this section hold many songbirds and other wildlife.

The last day of the Bruneau really packs a punch.  Five-Mile Rapid contains 31/2 miles of continuous class III to IV whitewater!  A great way to finish a fantastic trip.

We offer a six-day Jarbidge/Bruneau combination, and a four-day trip on the Bruneau only. The Bruneau is a great trip by itself, but we encourage everyone to treat yourself to the extra two days on the Jarbidge.  It is a river you won’t soon forget.
